- T = the fibre. Here T = polyester (T for "Terylene/Tery", the old name for polyester). So T30S = polyester. (C = cotton, R = rayon/viscose.)
- 30 = the count number in the English cotton count system (Ne). This is the key number that tells you the thickness.
- S = "singles" — a single-ply yarn (one strand). T30S/2 would mean two-ply (two strands twisted together).

- T30S (singles) — a single strand of 30-count yarn. One yarn, as spun.
- T30S/2 (two-ply) — two strands of 30-count yarn twisted together. The resulting yarn is roughly twice as thick (equivalent to about a 15-count single), but much stronger, smoother and more balanced than a single.
Two-ply yarn (like T30S/2 or T32S/2) is stronger, smoother, rounder and more durable than a single of equivalent thickness. The two strands balance each other's twist, reducing snarling and giving a more even surface. Two-ply is preferred for: high-quality shirting, sewing thread, fabric that needs extra strength, and premium woven fabric where surface smoothness matters. The trade-off is higher cost (two spinning + twisting steps).
