Polyester spun yarn is made entirely from polyester staple fiber (PSF) — short-cut polyester fibers that are carded, drawn, and spun into continuous yarn on ring or open-end spinning systems. Unlike polyester filament yarn (DTY/FDY), polyester spun yarn has a softer, cotton-like texture due to fiber ends projecting from the yarn surface, making it more comfortable in direct fabric contact while retaining the full durability advantages of 100% polyester. Its combination of maximum durability, low moisture absorption, excellent wrinkle resistance, and the most competitive price among all spun yarn types makes it the preferred raw material for industrial workwear, sewing thread production, technical fabric, and any application where performance at low cost is the priority.

Production Methods

Ring Spun vs Open-End Spinning

Both methods produce 100% polyester spun yarn — choose based on your count requirement and application.

Ring Spun
Quality Grade · Ne 16–60
The traditional method where fibers are fully drafted and continuously twisted by a ring and traveller mechanism. Produces a smoother, stronger, more uniform yarn with lower hairiness than open-end. The preferred method for fine counts (Ne 30–60) and quality-critical applications like sewing thread and fine fabric.
Count RangeNe 16 – Ne 60
SurfaceSmoother, lower hairiness
StrengthHigher (≥14 cN/tex @ Ne30)
Fiber GradeCarded or Combed
Best ForSewing thread, fine woven, shirting
PriceSlightly higher production cost
Open-End (Rotor)
Economy Grade · Ne 10–30
A high-speed rotor spinning method that opens fiber into a ring inside a rotor and reassembles it into yarn. Significantly faster and more economical than ring spinning, producing a slightly bulkier, more textured yarn with higher hairiness. The preferred method for coarser counts (Ne 10–30) where cost is a priority over surface quality.
Count RangeNe 10 – Ne 30
SurfaceMore textured, bulkier
StrengthSlightly lower (≥12 cN/tex @ Ne30)
Fiber GradeCarded only

Applications of Polyester Spun Yarn

100% polyester spun yarn is the workhorse of the industrial and workwear textile industry — combining maximum durability with minimum cost.

Industrial Sewing Thread
100% polyester spun yarn is the raw material for industrial sewing thread — twisted and finished into multi-ply thread used in garment assembly, leather goods, footwear, upholstery, and technical textile stitching. Polyester thread's high strength, low stretch, and resistance to UV and chemicals make it superior to cotton thread for most industrial applications.
Ne 40 / 45 / 602-ply / 3-plyCombed Ring
Workwear & Industrial Fabric
100% polyester spun yarn woven into plain weave, twill, and canvas fabric for industrial workwear, protective clothing, coveralls, and work shirts. Pure polyester outperforms poly-cotton blends in environments requiring maximum abrasion resistance, tear strength, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability through repeated industrial washing.
Ne 20 / 30Ring / OECarded
Industrial & Technical Fabric
Coarse polyester spun yarn (Ne 10–16) is woven into heavy canvas for tarpaulins, truck covers, awning fabric, tent fabric, and geotextile base cloth. The 100% polyester composition provides superior weather and UV resistance compared to cotton canvas. Also used in filter fabric for dust filtration and liquid filtration applications.
Ne 10 / 16Open-EndCarded
Knitted Fabric & Fleece
Medium counts of polyester spun yarn (Ne 20–30) are used in weft knitting to produce fleece fabric, heavy jersey, and interlock for budget garments and outdoor blankets. The pure polyester composition provides excellent pilling resistance and colour retention after washing compared to cotton knit or blended knit fabrics.
Ne 20 / 30Ring SpunCarded
Home Textiles & Upholstery
Polyester spun yarn is widely used in sofa fabric, upholstery cloth, carpet base fabric, and curtain lining. Its abrasion resistance, UV stability, and dimensional stability make it ideal for furniture fabric that must withstand years of daily use. Also used in mattress ticking, pillow fabric, and decorative home textile weaves.
Ne 16 / 20Ring / OECarded
Mosquito Net & Fine Mesh
Fine polyester spun yarn (Ne 40–60) is used in mosquito net production and fine mesh fabric for agriculture, fishing, and protective screens. Polyester's resistance to moisture, rot, and UV makes it far more durable than nylon in outdoor applications. Also used in insect screening fabric and window net fabric for construction.
