Polyester POY (Pre-Oriented Yarn) is a partially oriented filament yarn produced by melt spinning at moderate take-up speeds. As an intermediate product in the polyester yarn supply chain, POY serves primarily as the raw material for draw-texturing mills that produce DTY. Its high extensibility and precise birefringence characteristics make it the ideal feedstock for consistent, high-quality DTY production. Yaakan supplies POY to texturing mills across South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa that seek factory-direct pricing from China's leading POY manufacturers.

Important Note for Texturing Mills

POY is a sensitive intermediate product. Winding tension, cone shape, and packaging conditions affect draw-texturing performance. All our POY is wound to standard cone specifications optimized for common draw-texturing machines. Please inform us of your machine type (Barmag, SSM, Rieter, etc.) and we will confirm the appropriate winding parameters.

Quality & Testing

Why POY Quality Matters More Than Other Yarn Types

POY quality directly determines the quality of the DTY produced downstream. Inconsistencies in birefringence, elongation, or oil pick-up lead to uneven DTY texture, broken filaments during texturing, and yield losses. Our POY is sourced exclusively from mills with continuous quality monitoring — ensuring your texturing operation runs at optimal efficiency.

Where POY Fits

POY's Role in the Polyester Supply Chain

POY is the critical intermediate that connects the petrochemical industry to finished textile yarn.

Who buys POY from Yaakan? Primarily draw-texturing mills in India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Turkey, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Egypt that convert POY into DTY using Barmag, SSM, Rieter, or similar texturing machines. We supply POY when local supply is insufficient, when specific luster or denier combinations are not available domestically, or when our pricing is more competitive than local sources.

Who Uses POY Yarn

Applications & End Users

POY has two main user groups: draw-texturing mills (the primary buyer) and direct weaving applications where POY is used without further texturing.

Draw-Texturing Mills (DTY Production)
The primary end use. Texturing mills purchase POY as their main raw material and convert it to DTY on draw-texturing machines (Barmag, Murata, Rieter, SSM). POY quality directly determines DTY quality and machine efficiency. This is where the majority of global POY supply is consumed.
All deniersSD and BrightConsistent elongation
Direct Weaving (Certain Applications)
In some markets, coarser POY (150D+) is used directly as weft yarn in low-cost fabric production without texturing, taking advantage of its lower price vs DTY. The resulting fabric has less bulk and elasticity but is suitable for certain basic textile applications.
150D+Weft applicationCost-sensitive markets
Air-Jet Texturing Feed Yarn
Some air-jet texturing processes use POY as the feed yarn (instead of FDY) to produce air-textured yarn (ATY). The high extensibility of POY is an advantage in the air-jet texturing process for producing voluminous, irregular-textured yarns used in upholstery and technical textiles.

How POY Is Made

The POY Production Process

POY is produced at lower take-up speeds than FDY, creating partial orientation that gives it the extensibility needed for draw-texturing.

01
PET Chips Drying
PET chips are dried to remove moisture (target ≤ 30 ppm water) to prevent hydrolysis during spinning, which would degrade polymer molecular weight.
02
Melt Spinning
Dried chips are melted in a screw extruder (~280°C) and extruded through multi-hole spinnerets. Filament count depends on spinneret hole number.
03
Partial Orientation
Filaments are wound at 3,000–3,500 m/min — slower than FDY — achieving partial but not full molecular orientation. This controlled partial orientation gives POY its characteristic extensibility (110–160% elongation at break).
04
Oil Application & Winding
Spin finish (oil) is applied to reduce friction and static during texturing. Yarn is precision-wound onto paper tube cones at controlled tension — critical for uniform unwind during draw-texturing.
How POY Compares

POY vs FDY vs DTY

Understanding where POY sits in the polyester yarn family helps clarify why it is the right — or wrong — product for your needs.

Are you looking for a yarn for direct fabric production? If you do not have draw-texturing equipment, you likely need DTY yarn (for knitting/weaving) or FDY yarn (for weaving/warp knitting) — not POY. Contact our team and we will advise the right product for your application.

Why Source POY from Yaakan

Reliable POY Supply for Your Texturing Mill

Top-Tier Mill Sourcing — Hengli, Tongkun, Xinfengming
China's three largest polyester producers account for over 40% of global POY capacity. We source directly from these mills, guaranteeing consistent birefringence and elongation across every batch — the most critical quality variables for texturing mills.
Batch Consistency — Critical for Texturing Lines
POY elongation variation between batches causes DTY quality inconsistency. We supply from the same mill and same spinning position whenever possible within an order, minimizing inter-batch variation that disrupts texturing machine settings.
18 Years of Texturing Mill Supply Experience
We understand the specific needs of DTY texturing mills — packaging tension, cone shape, elongation targets, and OPU levels. Our experience means we ask the right questions and supply POY that performs on your machines.
Competitive FOB Xiamen Pricing
Our direct mill relationships and volume purchasing allow us to offer POY pricing that is consistently competitive against local Indian, Taiwanese, or Korean alternatives for buyers in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
